APIQWTC 2011 - 2012 Scholarship -
Call of Applications

APIQWTC (Asian Pacific Islander Queer Women and
Transgender Community) is a non-profit consortium of more than
fifteen organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area providing
support and community for nearly 500 queer Asian and Pacific
Islander individuals. The APIQWTC scholarship supports queer API
women and transgender people in their pursuit of
technical/professional training or higher education. The
scholarship hopes to recognize those who are active in the
community and encourage future leaders. APIQWTC will be awarding
scholarships of $500 to two Asian/Pacific Islander lesbian,
bisexual, or queer women or transgender individuals pursuing
technical/professional training or an undergraduate/graduate
degree.
AWARD CRITERIA
Current students in a certificate or degree-granting program as
well as high school seniors pursuing further education or
training in summer 2012 or fall 2012 are eligible to apply.
Applicants should demonstrate academic commitment as well as
community involvement.
APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS
Please submit:
A cover letter
A resume or c.v.
A two-page double-spaced personal statement. The personal
statement should address community involvement and future goals.
How has your cultural heritage, sexual orientation, and/or
gender identity influenced your life and any activities in which
you have been involved? Discuss any relevant experiences up to
the present and how you see yourself
involved in the community in the future, either through your
career or otherwise.
An official transcript
At least one but no more than two letters of recommendation.
Letter(s) of reference should come from an instructor, employer,
academic counselor, coach, leader, or any other individual not
related to you who is familiar with your personal, academic, or
leadership qualities.
Please submit statements and resumes/c.v.s electronically no
later than 7pm February 12, 2012. Letters and transcripts must
be postmarked by February 12, 2012.

6-8, 2012!
Love Tahoe long-time? First-timer? Either way, find your magical winterland fun with us --
whether it's skiing, boarding, photo-taking, snowshoeing,
snowperson-building, or "cabineering" (cozy-cabin-relaxing, cooking, eating,
games-playing) !
Don't miss out on this special weekend! APIQWTC
is co-organizing this trip with Omusubi
(our fellow organization for queer and trans women of
Japanese descent).There is room for 20 people at our reserved mega-cabin, the
marvelous Richardson House at historic Camp Richardson.
We expect these spaces to fill quickly. RSVP
with deposit must be received by the event organizer by December 14 firm .

(Cost per person is the two-night amount, even if you are

- Cancellation policy for this event:
If you cancel your spot, after 12/15, we will be unable
to refund deposit unless we find another person to replace

If the trip gets canceled by the event organizer, you will
be refunded your deposit. We will know by 12/15 whether
trip will be canceled.
Misc. FAQ:
- Kids welcome. Kids pay full cost (same as adults)
if they will sleep in their own bed/take up their own spot
(the cabin has a per person limit). If kids sleep in same
bed with parent, we can get away with 1or 2 extra above
the max-occupancy limit .
- Pets not allowed in the cabin.
- Activities to expect:
Decide how you want to spend your time! We'll be
sure to offer opportunities for all kinds of outings.
For those interested, there are ski/board resorts nearby,
and equipment rental places also. Skiing,
Snowboarding, Snow-cave Building, Snowshoeing,
Cross-Country Skiing, Cooking/Eating with some awesome
chefs, Laughing, Talk Story, Games, Movies, General Fun
and Merriment

APIQWTC 2010 - 2011 scholarship
announcement
Please join the APIQWTC scholarship committee in
congratulating
Wen Liu and Estelle Davis as our recipients of this years award.
Both individuals distinguished themselves in their community
activism and academic achievement among a very competitive pool
of applicants.
Congratulations to both for their impressive accomplishments!
WEN LIU
is a queer Taiwanese community organizer and graduate student in
the Social-Personality Psychology Ph.D. Program at the City
University of New York, Graduate Center. As an undergraduate at
University of Washington, Wen co-founded the Queer People of
Color Alliance, Youth for Middle East, and
Chinese Speaking Queers. Wen additionally worked as a
programming coordinator at Q Center, the LGBT resource center,
advocating particularly for queer students of color. Wen has
also organized East African, Latino, and Asian immigrant
custodial staff by forming a multi-generational labor solidarity
group called International Workers and Students for Justice to
combat lay offs and workplace harassment. This summer Wen will
conduct qualitative research on lesbian and bisexual Southeast
Asian migrant workers in Taiwan to underscore how they have
formed community and comradeship in their fight against
capitalist exploitation.

SARAH ESTELLE DAVIS
is a second-generation queer Filipina American
who will begin the Master's in Public Health at San Francisco
State University in fall 2011. She hopes to improve
accessibility by training health care professionals in cultural
competency. Estelle plans to develop frameworks that are
particularly inclusive of LGBT, trauma survivors, and Asian
American communities. She has worked eight years as a public
health worker at organizations such as Center for Health
Training, Fenway Community Health Center, and Marin AIDS
Project. She is currently a legal worker at Communities United
for Restorative Justice, an organization that combats the
criminalization of young men of color and the displacement of
low-income communities. As an undergraduate at Tufts University,
Estelle examined the medicalization of polycystic ovary
syndrome, the most common reproductive disorder in reproductive
aged women.
Estelle will be at the APIQWTC 2012 lunar banquet to thank
APIQWTC in person.
