  • Young Song's Memorial & Healing Ceremony
Join us as we send Young off with Love, Light & Laughter

    Sunday, Feb 22

    Center for Transformative Change

2584 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way
    Berkeley, CA 94704

    Location Map
    http://tinyurl.com/brcrlz

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved sister-friend Young Song who took her life on January 4, 2009.

While this past month has been filled with shock, grief and utter disbelief, a magical unfolding of sorts has also taken place among those she has left behind. Some of us strangers to each other, while others familiar (but only reconnecting after years of being apart) are collectively witnessing a remarkable abundance of LOVE and generosity as well as uncanny synchronicty and a rare kind of beauty.

It is from this place, we honor and celebrate the life and gifts of our beloved Young and extend this invitation to you.

Please join us in this gathering.  All are invited - whether you were close to Young, hung out a couple of times or perhaps caught sight of her walking by (hard to miss as she is ridiculously *magnetic*), your Presence is most welcome.

    HEALING CIRCLE & COMMUNITY ALTAR
Young's Memorial will include a Healing Circle and a Community Altar. All are encouraged to participate (or simply witness) by bringing an item of your choice to
place on the altar (i.e., a photo, a flower or lei, a crystal, a letter, a memorabilia, anything that moves you).

And if you are unable to join us, you may send your item(s) along with your name attached to it (and if you wish, a note to be read out loud on your behalf).

Please send your altar item(s) and address it to:

    Attention: Lakhana Peou
    c/o: Tei Narumi Okamoto
    (Address is removed)

If you're sending a photo, please email it to Saun-Toy Trotter at
    sauntoy@gmail.com

And we'll be delighted to print it and place it on the altar for you :)

Please postmark it by:   TUESDAY 17 February 2009

    YOUNG'S SLIDESHOW
This gathering will also include a SLIDESHOW of Young, so if there's a photo you'd like to share with the community, we'd love to include it! Please email your fotografias to:

    India Alexis at
    indiaalexis@me.com
    indiaalexishm@gmail.com (for larger files)

    Deadline:
    MONDAY, 16 February

    WE NEED YOUR $ SUPPORT
Last week you may have received a donor letter requesting funds to help allay the unexpected costs related to Young's passing. India Alexis, Young's companion of the last nine years, is not only devasted by her loss but is shouldering a substantial
    financial burden.

Our estimated need to alleviate these costs is $5,000.

Any amount between $10 to $1,000 would be deeply appreciated.
Here are two possible ways to make your donation:

    1. Use paypal (or open a new account which is simple and straightforward).  Log on at www.paypal.com and send money to the following recipient account: indiaalexishm@me.com

    2. Please make a check out to India Alexis and mail it to:

    India Alexis
    c/o Sumeeta Gawande
    (Address is removed)

We've been showered with precious gifts as a result of Young's death.
And for this, we are truly blessed.

We hope you can join us for Young Song's Memorial Service & Healing Ceremony  Sunday, 22 February at 2pm.

    in deep gratitude,
Milyoung Cho, Kim Compoc, Meeta Gawande, Alice Y. Hom, LaRaye Lyles,
Marie Morohoshi, Tei Okamoto, Cara Page, Lakhana Peou, Jane Rabanal,

  • "Good Asian Drivers"
    APIQWTC Scholarship Fund presents

    7pm, Wednesday, May 20
    at the Velvet

    3411 Macarthur Blvd
    Oakland, CA

$6 (proceeds go to our scholarship fund); 21 and over only

For a night of fun and laughs at Velvet in Oakland.  Come join us to raise money for our college scholarship fund!

The Good Asian Drivers have been nationally recognized in Hyphen Magazine and Curve Magazine and will be donating their time all the way from Boston. Don't miss this chance to see them!

The Good Asian Drivers broke into the national spotlight in 2008 when slam poet Kit Yan and songwriter Melissa Li launched an unforgettable cross-country tour, playing in over 30 states in 12 weeks. Together, this performance powerhouse emerged from their breakthrough debut as one of the most electrifying artists of their generation.

Melissa Li's music, a catchy blend of folk-rock and pop, has been heralded for its honest lyrics and bold sound. A seasoned songwriter, Li's voice and style are distinct, matching urgency and charm in her unique delivery. Melissa started her career performing in Boston at the tender age of 16. In 2007, she received a Jonathan Larson grant for her talent in music composition. Her most notable appearances include Boston Pride, The Somerville Theater, and numerous colleges and universities across the nation. Her highly-anticipated debut album, "2 Seconds Away" released in 2008 to enthusiastic reviews.

Kit Yan's spoken word tackles race and gender with candor, eloquence, and humor. Hailed by the press as "a slam force to be reckoned with," Yan's resolute delivery packs a mighty punch, leaving his audience completely transfixed. Wittily crafted and genuinely passionate, his pieces are rare treasures amongst a new generation of slam poets. Accomplished beyond his years, Yan started competing in Boston with professionals twice his age when he was just a college student. Before the age of 21, he landed a coveted spot in the Lizard Lounge National Slam Team, competed in the Individual World Poetry Slam, and won the world's largest slam.

    6th Annual Family Presentation Party

    Saturday, May 30
    Save the Date !!!

API Family Pride's 6th annual "Family Presentation Party" is a way of acknowledging the difficult process that our families have undergone to overcome homophobia and understand and accept us as we are.  This is a time to commend the private, personal struggles of love and transformation in our individual families with public acknowledgement from us, their children and a grateful community.

WHO MAY BE RECOGNIZED-- ANY parent, sibling, relative or friend who loves and accepts their API LGBT child/relative/friend in spite of the shame and isolation imposed by a homophobic society may be recognized. The person(s) may be living or deceased and may be of any race or ethnicity.

  • APIQWTC Softball Team

A SOFTBALL TEAM OF OUR OWN...

We are trying to get a team together for the women's league in Oakland. Pure fun and play in the summertime!

The deets:  Teams typically play on Monday nights at 6:45, 7:55, or 9:05 mainly at Owen Jones Field (5000 Redwood Road, Oakland). Season starts June 22nd  and is roughly 10 games long plus playoffs.

Because APIQWTC is subsidizing the team, the cost is now only $50 per game player for the entire season and $10 for Subs. Please let us know asap if you are interested and which category you fit in:

    1) Gamers: who want to play every game.
    2) Subs: who want to play a couple of games to half a season.

Also let us know your level of experience. Depending on response cost may go down per person. We are still looking for players!!! If you're interested in playing ball with us, use this URL:

    Performing Diaspora Festival Pass

In the stillness of night, Neang Sovann Atmani bathes in a river in wait of her absent husband. She succumbs to the phantom weight of his memory and gives herself to its caress. Drawing upon the hypnotic, serpentine vocabulary and centuries-old stories of Cambodian classical dance, Prumsodun Ok interweaves text with classical legend, video/sound with movement. Through the image of the sacred androgyne -- a spirit that manifests itself differently with each life, a brahmin that is half-male and half-female -- Ok invites us to contemplate the fluidity between vinhean (spirit) and rub (form), man and woman, life and reincarnation.

Performing Diaspora is an artist residency program, a series of talks, and a day-long symposium culminating in a performance festival in November featuring dance, music, theater, media and interdisciplinary artists at the intersection of traditional arts and contemporary performance.

CounterPULSE, one of the Bay Area's most exciting centers for ground breaking performance, presents "Robam Lom Arom" a new work by Prumsodun Ok as part of the three-week Performing Diaspora Festival.

Prumsodun Ok is one of the festival's thirteen California dance, music, theater, media, and interdisciplinary artists who are using traditional forms as a basis for experimentation and innovation, representing the modern California experience. www.counterpulse.org/performingdiaspora.shtml
